I think I’m going to switch to the texts for Ascension. The Ascension of Jesus is celebrated 40 days after Easter, and so it always falls on a Thursday. Since not many people usually show up for Thursday services, even though it was once one of the most important days of the Christian calendar.
I love this one. Jesus floats off into heaven, and the disciples stand there with their mouths hanging open looking at an empty sky. Which I suppose is a natural response to seeing someone fly off into the clouds. I think I’d stare too. But not what Jesus told them to do… he didn’t say “Hey, watch this amazing trick I’m going to do.” He had just told them that when the spirit came, they would be his witnesses. The angels that come end up chewing them out… “Why are you sitting there staring at the sky?” Its almost like they’re trying to spur the guys to get busy.
There are several different directions I could take on this one. Lots of random notes on the brain so far. How to tie in Luke’s ascension is interesting, since Acts is the continuation of the Gospel.
